Fireplace Repair in Pasadena: Written Report, Licensed Technicians

The call came from a homeowner along the Arroyo Seco corridor, a few blocks east of the Rose Bowl. She'd lit her first fire of the season in a 1912 Craftsman bungalow and noticed smoke curling out from the front of the firebox instead of drawing up the flue. The room smelled acrid. The scan confirmed two cracked refractory panels on the back wall and a warped throat damper that couldn't seat closed. For a masonry Craftsman firebox like hers, the fix was replacing the damaged panels with new refractory panels rated to 2,500°F and swapping the corroded throat damper for a top-mount damper with a silicone gasket seal. A prefab fireplace would require a different approach entirely: prefab units use manufacturer-specific panel kits, and mixing parts voids the listing. Masonry repair allows more flexibility, but the materials and installation still need to meet CSIA standards.

After the panel replacement and damper conversion, we did a smoke draw test to confirm proper draft. The fireplace pulled cleanly with no spillage at the opening. Her Craftsman bungalow's original firebox is now structurally sound and safe for regular use through the season.
