Fireplace Repair in Pasadena: Written Report in Plain Language

The scan confirmed two cracked refractory panels on the back wall and a warped throat damper that couldn't seat closed. For a masonry Craftsman firebox like hers, the fix was replacing the damaged panels with new refractory panels rated to 2,500°F and swapping the corroded throat damper for a top-mount damper with a silicone gasket seal. A prefab fireplace would require a different approach entirely: prefab units use manufacturer-specific panel kits, and mixing parts voids the listing. Masonry repair allows more flexibility, but the materials and installation still need to meet CSIA standards.

After the panel replacement and damper conversion, we did a smoke draw test to confirm proper draft. The fireplace pulled cleanly with no spillage at the opening.
